Construction began in 1994 and was completed in 1999 at a cost of $650,000,000 USD. The opening was held December of 1999. The fabulous hotel was designed by architect Tom Wright of WKK Architects. The design and construction were managed by Canadian engineer Rick Gregory of WS Atkins.
Burj Al Arab Jumeirah was built to resemble the sail of a dhow, a type of Arabian vessel. Two "wings" spread in a V to form a vast "mast", while the space between them is enclosed in a massive atrium.
Architect Tom Wright is quoted as explaining this about the structure, "The client wanted a building that would become an iconic or symbolic statement for Dubai." Judging from the structure, the Burj Al Arab is that very icon for Dubai.
