HEROISM AND HEARTBREAK FOR HOPKINS AND DUCATI AT THRUXTON

John Hopkins in Action at Thruxton

  • Two front row starts for the Ducati rider
  • Sure-fire podiums foiled
  • Welcome return to the front of the BSB field
The Lloyds British Moto Rapido Ducati squad went through the full spectrum of emotions this weekend (31 July-2 August) at round seven of the 2015 British Superbike Championship at Thruxton in Hampshire.

The 1199 Panigale Superbike had been in the top three throughout Friday and Saturday practice, and in qualifying Hopper found himself in an intense battle for pole position with the in-form Josh Brookes. The Ducati was fastest in the second of the three-part session, but just missed out on the number one spot in the top ten shootout by a couple of tenths.

Starting from second the #15 bike reared its front wheel off the line, but the former MotoGP star kept the throttle pinned and maintained his position in the early running. The race was halted after six laps with oil on the track, but on the restart Hopper blasted into the lead.

Together with Brookes and Dan Linfoot, he powered away from the field and the trio began swapping positions at a scorching pace. With just four laps to go there was heartache for the hard-working local squad, as a component failure put John out of the race.

The team faced the herculean task of replacing the exhaust system before the second race of the day, and admirably got the bike ready and in position for another front row start. It was another brilliant start to the contest, with Hopper jumping to second place off the line and settling in 0.8s behind race leader Brookes.

A safety car period followed, and on the restart Hopper was once again right with the leader. With 14 laps completed, however, a slight mistake at the Club Chicane saw him clip the kerb and come down, causing further heartbreak.

Despite the disappointment, there are huge positives for the team to take away from the weekend, and Lloyds British Moto Rapido Ducati will be hunting for that elusive first podium in two weeks’ time at Cadwell Park.

John Hopkins Interview

John Hopkins said: “I am more frustrated than disappointed and that is because we did have the podiums in our grasp. Positives – there are loads of them to take away from the weekend. We have had a few technical issues and so we haven’t been able to do long runs, but this is the kind of thing that people get rid of in pre-season testing and we have not had that luxury so we are kind of learning as we go on during the race weekends. Even so I am extremely happy with the way things are going on the bike, the way it suits my riding style is amazing and I’m enjoying myself on a motorcycle like I haven’t in a long, long time.

“There was nothing anyone could do about the component failure in race one, and unfortunately in the second race the safety car came out and spoilt my strategy. I felt a lot more comfortable on the last lap before the safety car came out and I always save my tyres three quarters in and then in the last five laps when they drop off I put the hammer down and that was my plan. With no championship points at stake I thought I would try and hang with Brookes and go for the win but unfortunately I hit the kerb and lost the front.

“Even though we haven’t had the results, the positives are amazing and I am really happy with the way things are going. I enjoy Thruxton it but it is not my favourite track, so I'm really hopeful to carry on and get that podium.

Team Principal Steve Moore said: "We had a component failure on the Friday which we replaced, and a couple of other niggly issues, so unfortunately that cost us half a session. We never had a good run at it and what we do need is track time, so John is in a situation where he is playing catch up. Some of the issues we are having are unique to how he rides, how he uses the clutch, how hard he is on the motor, how hard he is on the tyres all those sort of things that we are learning on a race weekend where most teams would have ticked that box months ago. So we have to be pleased that we are running at the front, that's the big difference now - John wasn’t thinking of defending his position (in race 2) he was thinking of taking first.

Thruxton-Hopper

"When we first signed John up we thought we'd be aiming for the top ten, then at Brands that became top five and then we came here and by the second session we were talking about winning races and that is impressive for us, the team was perfect and we can’t ask for more really."

It was a difficult weekend for James Egan in the National Superstock 1000 Championship. Struggling for set-up in free practice and qualifying, the South African rider secured 22nd on the grid for the race, however a technical problem saw him stall the bike as they lined up for the race start. This forced the #81 machine right to the back as the lights went out, but despite blasting his way back through to 25th, the mechanical gremlins returned and he was forced to retire.

James Egan at Thruxton

James Egan said: “It’s been tough for us this weekend – to be honest we haven’t had the right set-up all weekend, the bike has been working well one moment and then not the next. We were held for quite a while on the line and the clutch felt a bit spongey, and we think that the hydraulic fluid started to boil which caused it to slip. It wasn’t worth crashing the bike so I had to retire, but we’ll regroup and come back stronger at Cadwell Park.”

FIFTH VICTORY OF THE SEASON FOR AUDI IN THE DTM

  • Edoardo Mortara celebrates commanding success at the Red Bull Ring
  • Mattias Ekström thrills with recovery from ninth to fifth place
  • Audi best manufacturer halfway through 2015 DTM season
Five victories in nine races and the lead of the manufacturers’ classification: Audi is the best manufacturer in the DTM halfway through the 2015 season.

The man of the day in the ninth race of the season at the Red Bull Ring at Spielberg was Edoardo Mortara. The Italian from Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline, after setting best times in both free practice sessions, clinched the top spot on the grid with a clear advantage and took a commanding race victory in his Castrol EDGE Audi RS 5 DTM. For Mortara this marked the third success in the DTM and for Audi the 72nd.

“When I’m in front I can control the race,” Mortara had announced after qualifying. From the second lap on, this was the case. The Italian managed to successively pull clear of his immediate rivals and gain more than a three-second advantage some of the time. “My car was simply perfect today,” Mortara said after crossing the finish line. “I’m proud of this success and overjoyed. I’m hoping for this to continue to tomorrow.”

An impressive performance was shown yet again by his team-mate Mattias Ekström as well. The Swede in the Red Bull Audi RS 5 DTM advanced from position nine on the grid to fifth place. During his recovery, he managed a particularly remarkable overtaking manoeuvre on the last lap against BMW driver Augusto Farfus as a result of which he secured two additional points.
Mike Rockenfeller thrilled the numerous spectators at the Red Bull Ring in the Schaeffler Audi RS 5 DTM of Audi Sport Team Phoenix with superb overtaking manoeuvres too. After dropping to twelfth place on the starting lap following contact with BMW driver Bruno Spengler, he recovered to eighth place. A finish in the points was also achieved by Adrien Tambay in the Playboy Audi RS 5 DTM, in tenth place.

Nico Müller in the Audi Financial Services Audi RS 5 DTM of Audi Sport Team Rosberg saw the checkered flag in twelfth place after having been brushed twice by Bruno Spengler. Timo Scheider (AUTO TEST Audi RS 5 DTM) and Miguel Molina (Teufel Audi RS 5 DTM) were entangled in gripping midfield position battles and finished the race in positions 16 and 18.

Major misfortune struck Jamie Green. The Briton took the lead from Edoardo Mortara at the start and came back from lap one as the front runner. But then the transmission of his Hoffmann Group Audi RS 5 DTM could not be shifted anymore. Green was forced to retire in the pits and, without any defences, lost the lead of the standings to Mercedes driver Pascal Wehrlein (94 points).

The best Audi driver after the first half of the season is Mattias Ekström in second place of the standings with 86 points, ahead of Edoardo Mortara (83) and Jamie Green (81). In the manufacturers’ classification, Audi, after nine of 18 races, continues to head the standings with 337 points, trailed by Mercedes-Benz (300) and BMW (247).

“Obviously, we’re very happy about Edo’s (Mortara) dominant victory,” said Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. “All our cars were very fast in the race. That makes the retirement of Jamie Green, who could have made a major step forwards today, all the more frustrating. The transmission is a specification component in the DTM. We need to find out what the problem was and do everything within our means to prevent something like this from happening again.”

The second half of the season will begin on Sunday with race ten that will be started at 15.18 (live coverage on ‘Das Erste’ beginning at 15.00 CEST).

PORSCHE CARRERA CUP GB GETS BACK UNDER WAY AT SNETTERTON

Captivating Championship heads to demanding Norfolk track for more thrilling action
  • Season resumes for rounds 9 & 10 of the UK's fastest one-make series after six-week summer break
  • Redline Racing's Dan Cammish and Team Parker Racing duo Josh Webster and Stephen Jelley currently the top three Pros
  • Juta Racing's Ignas Gelzinis and Redline Racing's John McCullagh lead the way in Pro-Am1 and Pro-Am2 respectively
  • Rookie Class couldn't be tighter with just one point separating Dino Zamparelli, Nicholas Latifi and Tom Sharp
The record-breaking 11-team Porsche Carrera Cup GB returns to action after its six week summer break with a mouth-watering double header at the sublime Snetterton 300 circuit. Rounds 9 & 10 of the scintillating 2015 season will feature 26 Type 991 911 GT3 Cup Cars with both sure to be full of action.

It has been all change since the Championship's last visit to the Norfolk track in August when defending champion, and Porsche Carrera Cup GB Scholar, Josh Webster visited the top step of the podium in both races. A new-for-2015 Rookie Class, three race categories and greater strength in depth throughout the field have combined to produce arguably the most exciting racing on the British Touring Car Championship support package so far this year.

If the Porsche Carrera Cup GB's previous 24 races there are anything to go by, the combination of long straights and challenging corners will put the talented grid to the test and should produce some close racing. It should be noted that qualifying will also be crucial since four out of the last six races at Snetterton 300 have been won by the pole-sitter.

Current points leader Dan Cammish will be looking to extend his winning streak after dominating proceedings at Croft. His back-to-back wins in North Yorkshire mean he has now proved victorious in 75% of races in 2015. This has culminated in a resounding 41 point lead at the top of the overall standings at the halfway point, with the Nationwide-backed Yorkshireman looking in ominous form.

Porsche Carrera Cup GB Scholar Josh Webster and Team Parker Racing teammate Stephen Jelley are providing the major challenge to Cammish's dominance. The 21-year-old Webster has proved his fighting qualities with a number of impressive displays going toe-to-toe with his older and more experienced competitors at the sharp end, whilst former BTCC driver Jelley has shown great consistency with regular podium finishes.

Others to watch out for include former double champion Michael Meadows, who has shown his race-winning ability with a majestic victory at Oulton Park and the rookie trio of Dino Zamparelli, Nicholas Latifi and Tom Sharp. The three talented and exciting drivers are separated by just one point in the fight for the £50,000 rookie prize after adapting seamlessly to six-gear, rear-engined life.

In the Pro-Am1 category, Juta Racing's Lithuanian Ignas Gelzinis holds a six-point lead over Boodles-backed Jordan Witt. 24-year-old Gelzinis, brother of former Pro-Am1 class champion Jonas, comes into the event with considerable momentum following a superb round eight drive. Karl Leonard also waits in the wings should either of the two pacesetters slip up.

In the tightest class, Redline Racing's John McCullagh and Asset Advantage Race Team's Iain Dockerill are involved in a mighty tussle for the Pro-Am2 lead. McCullagh's perfect weekend at Croft, where he clinched two wins, two poles and both fastest laps, has given him a slender one point lead over his nearest rival. The Lithuanian duo Nerijus Dagilis and Tautvydas Barstys are not far behind either in what promises to be an important weekend.

After qualifying on Saturday (8 August) at 14.20, round nine of the Carrera Cup GB will start at 10.45 on Sunday with round 10 later that day at 17.40 (9 August). Live coverage of Sunday's action will be broadcast on ITV4.
